- It's clear that tractors are the most recognisable pieces of farm machinery. The concept behind the tractor is a very old one. Steam driven traction engines were first adopted by farmers over 150 years ago. In the years since then, tractors have become incredibly varied and have been employed in a number of roles.
- The first combine harvesters were horse drawn but steam and then diesel power was used as it became available. The combine harvester undertakes three separate jobs at the same time: reaping, threshing and winnowing. The efficiency and yield of the harvest is therefore greatly increased. Every arable farmer will need to use a combine harvester at some point; they are very expensive however.
- The large majority of other items of farm machinery for sale need to be operated by a tractor. The PTO on the tractor provides the power to the machine if it's needed. Some examples include spreaders, balers and mowers
- Things such as ploughs and cultivators are used to get the soil prepared for replanting after the harvest. Machines like this are different in that they don't require an external power source. The tractor simply tows them over the field and the work is done on its own.
- One of the negative effects of the increase in farm machinery usage is that farming has become quite a dangerous industry. Safety measures are of paramount importance because farm machinery can easily injure or even kill a person.
